Tegan and Sara are taking it way back with their new project Hey, I’m Just Like You.
The new project is based on previously long-lost cassettes of the pair’s first-ever songs recorded back in high school. In 2019, while writing their memoir High School, Tegan and Sara found the 40-plus songs. Now, they have “rediscovered, reimagined, and re-recorded” the songs and will release them as a new project titled Hey, I’m Just Like You.
“This is the record we never could have made as teenagers,” the artists said. “Full of songs we never could have written as adults.”
“While working on our memoir, we discovered lost cassette tapes that had been unheard for over 20 years,” Tegan recalled. “They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 1… we immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story.”
The Canadian duo did their best to retain as much of the songs’ original forms as possible. “With only minor tweaks to lyrics and structure, we tried to remain true to the original essence of each song,” Sara added.
Hey, I’m Just Like You will be released on Sept. 27.
