“Barbie” officially has a home at Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, with the actress also set to star in the film.
The movie, to be distributed by Warner Bros., has been in the works since 2014, changing hands a number of times before landing screenwriting duo Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach this week.
Gerwig and Baumbach have been dating since 2011 and earlier this year they welcomed their first child together. The pair previously collaborated on “Greenberg”, “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America”.
According to Variety, the upcoming movie will see Robbie portray the iconic doll and Gerwig is also being eyed to direct. Filmmaker Patty Jenkins was previously attached to the film.
Before Robbie, 29, signed on to star, the role had previously been pitched to Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway.
Oscar-nominated Robbie can be seen next in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”. Meanwhile, Gerwig is busy working on her “Little Women” adaptation starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep.
“Little Women” is scheduled to hit big screens on Dec. 25.
