Producers have been teasing the upcoming fourth-season premiere of “Riverdale”, which will pay tribute to late star Luke Perry, and a key detail was revealed during the show’s Comic-Con panel on Sunday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the episode — titled “In Memoriam” — will feature guest star Shannen Doherty, who famously co-starred with Perry on “Beverly Hills, 90210”.
As THR notes, Perry and Doherty reconnected in 2015 when both were experiencing health issues, and remained close until Perry’s death at 51 in March.
As THR reports, “Riverdale” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told the audience that he had been pushing for Doherty to guest star “since season one. They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said yes. It’s very impactful.”
Following the announcement, Doherty confirmed the news via Twitter:

Ahead of the “Riverdale” panel, the cast sat down with TVLine for a revealing discussion about that blockbuster season finale that ended with blood-soaked Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) burning Jughead’s iconic hat in the woods.
“The only reason why that happened was because Cole was cold that night,” Apa tells TVLine.
“It literally was scripted with all four of us,” confirms Reinhart, “and he was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.’”
As for Jughead’s fate, the cast admits they’ve stopped trying to guess what’s in store for their characters.
“We’ve kind of given up, because we’re like, nothing we predict ever happens,” admits Mendes.
“But also, [the show’s writers] don’t even usually know what’s going to happen,” adds Reinhart, revealing the writers tend to “make it up as they… I hate to say that, but it’s true.”
As for what fans can expect in the upcoming season, Mendes teases that Season 4 is “really going to have a lot to do with senior year — football games, Vixen practices and relationships.”

In addition, the stars also reveal there will be a special Halloween episode this year, hint at another musical episode, and open up about the emotional season premiere, which will pay tribute to the late Luke Perry, who passed away earlier this year after suffering a massive stroke.
The new season of “Riverdale” debuts on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
