Cole Sprouse and girlfriend (or is it ex-girlfriend?) Lili Reinhart appear on the cover of the latest issue of W magazine. Inside they talk about their early acting gigs for the magazine’s “Screen Tests” interview series.
As Sprouse explains, the 26-year-old “Riverdale” star and his twin brother Dylan booked their first job when they were just eight months old, going on to become successful child stars, thanks to their hit Disney Channel sitcom “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”.
However, Sprouse says that once he turned 18 he needed a break from Hollywood and so, enrolled at NYU.
“I was pretty reclusive from the industry as a child,” he explains. “I had worked for all 18 years of my life so I hadn’t really immersed myself into a greater social context.”
According to Sprouse, growing up in front of the camera isn’t necessarily the healthiest way to come of age.
“This is going to sound a bit strange but you develop a moral sickness when you’re in front of a camera for a long time,” he says. “The act of performance is an incredible experience, and it’s really nice, but the part of the industry that’s fascinated with celebrity and idolatry and publicity can be dangerously validating, especially for young men, and so I found myself needing to detox from a lot of that.”
Sprouse points to other former child stars who have struggled with the transition to adult stars, and saw going to college as an effective way to achieve that.
“Many of us try to give the audience an image of our maturity through a couple of ways — whether it’s drug use or displays of sexuality or whatever it is,” says Sprouse. “We try to show the audience that we’re mature, we’re fully realized adults. I sort of figured that going to school would be another good way of showing that.”
