Lil Nas X has just made history.
On Monday, “Old Town Road” officially crossed 17 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest-running No. 1 single in chart history.
Lil Nas X’s crossover rap/country hit broke the record of 16 weeks previously held by both “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber, and “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boys II Men.
The 20-year-old celebrated the historic milestone on Twitter.
Lil Nas X’s collaborator, Billy Ray Cyrus, also commented on the record.
“17 is my new favorite number! 17 weeks No. 1 Single ‘Old Town Road’. 17 weeks No. 1 Album Some Gave All. My goal was always to make music that would touch people’s lives around the world,” the country star said.
Carey, who previously joked to a pap “darling, no” if she was worried about her record being beat, turned to Twitter to congratulate Lil Nas X.
“Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest running records in music history! We’ve been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen
and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!” she wrote.
Meanwhile, fans were also celebrating right along with the new record holder.
