Model Joan Smalls opened up her Miami home to Elle Decor where she spoke about where her inspiration for the classic design came from.

Jeremy Scott, the designer behind the wild designs of Moschino was seated next to Smalls at a dinner party where questioned him about his style.

“I asked him, ‘Is your place decorated in the same style?’” Smalls recalled. “And he said, ‘Absolutely not. It’s extremely white and clean.’ You wouldn’t expect it from him, but I can understand why. He wants that contrast between what you do and how you live, which I love.”

Scott’s words inspired Smalls to create a “breezy, cool and comfortable” home that was very different from her life in New York or when she travels around the world for work.

She praised Restoration Hardware for their interior design concierge services who took a “holistic” approach to designing her home.

“A lot of the time, my eye is drawn to more masculine shapes in furniture and not soft and delicate ones,” Smalls told the design publication. “The colours balance it all out.”

“It felt like when you walk into a hotel room and think, I love how this space makes me feel,” Smalls said of the first time she saw the completed two-bedroom retreat. “It is such an escape.”

Smalls adored what they did with the “heart of the home”- the kitchen, where she plans to cook habichuelas guisadas (red rice and beans) from her native Puerto Rico.

But her favourite part it the polished-nickel Ravelle round chandelier above her bed. “I always wanted a chandelier above my bed,” she added. “To me, it’s like a fairy tale.”
