Common and Ray Wimley are taking their act from the streets to late-night.
In July, Common walked by Wimley, who was performing on the street. Common joined in and soon, the two were freestyling back and forth.
The video generated nearly 700,000 views between Instagram and YouTube and led the pair to “The Tonight Show”. On Monday night, Jimmy Fallon invited Common and Wimley to flex their hip-hop improv in a game of “Wheel of Freestyle”.
For the uninitiated, the two rappers were given three words from a random word generator and tasked with incorporating them into a freestyle rap. Common and Wimley even turned the tables on Fallon and got him to spit some bars.
Common is very close to achieving a rare honour in showbiz: the EGOT. The “Glory” singer has received an Emmy, a Grammy, and an Oscar but is still on the hunt for the deal-sealing Tony. “If the Tony would come I’ll be grateful, I’m not going to turn it down,” Common told Fallon. “But anything I do, I just try to put my heart and soul and my passion into it, and the accolades that come, I’m very grateful if they come.”
Common stars in “The Kitchen” with Tiffany Haddish, Melissa McCarthy, and Elisabeth Moss.
