On Tuesday, reports began to emerge indicating that Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” had found its Prince Eric: none other than Harry Styles.
However, that news later proved to be unfounded, with The Wrap confirming that the One Direction singer was indeed offered the role — but turned it down.
It all started when the Twitter accounts of two movie theatre chains — AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas — tweeted that Styles had been cast, with both accounts subsequently deleting their tweets (per Business Insider‘s Jason Guerrasio).
However, The Wrap reports that “individuals with knowledge of the project” said that while the 25-year-old pop idol “is a fan of the project,” he “respectfully declined” Disney’s offer.
Had he taken the role, Styles would have starred opposite Disney Channel star Halle Bailey, who’s been cast as Ariel.
After making his big-screen debut in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk”, Styles has reportedly been casting about for a film project; according to The Wrap, he recently filmed a screen test in hopes of playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic, but the role ultimately went to Austin Butler.
Earlier this year, a source told The Sun that Styles would be shifting his focus from music to acting.
“Acting is something he really enjoys and he’s been working behind the camera on a number of different projects,” the source told The Sun back in January.
