R. Kelly was noticeably absent during a pre-trial court hearing on Thursday, but his lawyer says that it isn’t the singer’s fault.
Kelly has been in jail for over a month on racketeering and child pornography charges in both New York and Illinois.
The musician’s lawyer told Billboard that there is a perfectly good reason why he didn’t show up to the hearing– no one picked up Kelly.
“He’s in federal custody and it’s incumbent on the state to get him to Cook County… I can’t drive over in my Maserati and pick him up and they didn’t do it,” attorney Steve Greenberg told the publication. “They claimed he refused to come when nobody came to get him. What they said was just not true. It was the State’s Attorney lying to over up their own screw-up over the fact that they didn’t get him.”
A Cook County spokesperson has not made a comment at this point.
At the time of the trial, WTTW reported that Kelly “refused” transport.
Judge Lawrence Flood told Greenberg that Kelly “has to be here”. Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez reportedly told Flood that transportation had been arranged to bring Kelly from the federal correction centre where he’s being held. Flood then made the decision to delay ruling on Gonzalez’s bail motion.
Kelly is due back in court on Sept. 17.
