Eva Amurri Martino is hitting back at the backlash surrounding her daughter’s Mexican-themed birthday party.
Martino, the daughter of Sarandon and Italian director Franco Amurri, took to Instagram on Monday to clear the air after a series of photos from her 5-year-old daughter Marlowe’s “Cinco de Marlowe” party caused controversy.
Martino’s followers called out the pics that showed kids wearing sugar skull face paint and swinging at a piñata.

“With everything going on in this political climate, I thought now would be a great time to celebrate Mexico and the role it has had in our country culturally,” Martino, 34, wrote, adding that her daughter, Marlowe, is “obsessed with Mexico” since growing up with caretakers from the country and watching Disney’s 2017 animated film “Coco.”
Martino claims that Marlowe spoke Spanish before she knew English, which “made me really proud.”

“Of course this party was a rudimentary representation of Mexican culture since it was for young kids,” Martino continued. “This aside, we don’t only think it’s important to highlight the beauty of Mexican culture, or the horrors of the attack on Mexicans of late, with a birthday party.”
She later added that they only picked the theme “because of a love for Mexico and its people and a desire to celebrate in the midst of a lot of hate.”
Martino shares Marlowe and son Major with husband Kyle Martino, a former professional soccer player.
