Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian travelled to Dayton, Ohio, to pay tribute to the victims of the mass shooting that took place there three weeks earlier, leaving nine people dead and 27 injured.
On Sunday morning, West held a surprise Sunday Service at Dayton’s RiverScape MetroPark, with People reporting the event was not announced until hours before it took place.
Kardashian issued a tweet on Sunday, encouraging her 61.7 million Twitter followers to watch.
“In support of the victims and survivors of the Dayton mass shooting,” she tweeted, adding a link to a website providing a livestream from the service.
According to People, West and Kardashian were accompanied by their oldest children, 6-year-old daughter North and 3-year-old son Saint.
Near the end of the ceremony, comedian Dave Chappelle — who is hosting a benefit block party on Sunday evening — shared some words with the crowd.
“Dayton, today the whole world is looking at you,” Chapelle told the crowd, adding that although the city had “been through a tough time,” the people of Dayton are “still strong and the only way — the best way, that we can honour our fallen is by getting up better than we were before,” he continued. “We will not let those people die in vain.”
Meanwhile, the @TeamKanyeDaily Twitter account shared photos and video from the event:
