Missy Elliott is fast becoming a favourite for a new generation.
For those who grew up with the rap icon, her performance at the VMAs was a throwback to childhood. For a whole new group of kids, however, they found a new idol to adore.
It has been 14 years since Missy released an album. She hit the VMA stage on Monday with a mix of old and new while being awarded the MTV Video Vanguard Award, although that performance almost didn’t happen.
While speaking with Angie Martinez, Missy Elliott told her longtime friend that she was in the hospital for days before the performance. She was given some medication to get her through the show, but Missy was so tired that she didn’t see her performance until she was back at the hospital the next day and it was playing on the television.
Missy Elliott’s Iconology EP cured the drought of Missy music but many fans want a full album.
The “Work It” rapper tells Martinez that a bigger project is coming, along with another Lizzo collab, but she won’t give a release date just yet.
