Kacey Musgraves is lending her star power to a small one-hour photo store in the Koreatown district of Los Angeles and the results have been breathtaking.
As the “Slow Burn” singer explained in a lengthy Instagram post, it was sheer happenstance that brought her to the store. According to Musgraves, she and her sister were driving around L.A. in need of a one-hour photo place when they discovered Tom’s One Hour Photo & Lab “sandwiched between little bodegas.”
“It’s one of those rare mom-&-pop gems that has lasted thru trends coming and going and weirdly has come back around again without even realizing it,” she wrote, noting that the owner, in addition to developing photos, also does “nostalgic portrait sessions.”
She added: “Stop by, tell all your friends… Let’s keep this charming business afloat!”

We were just in LA and needed to find a One Hour Photo place quick. Sandwiched between little bodegas, my sister randomly found this place on Beverly Blvd in Korea Town called Tom’s One Hour Photo & Lab. It’s one of those rare mom-&-pop gems that has lasted thru trends coming and going and weirdly has come back around again without even realizing it. The owner, Tom, was SO adorable. He not only does film developing but (cheap) and nostalgic portrait sessions too. (He gave us digital files and we edited these but he’ll shoot on film if you ask him to.) Pick your favorite background! He made them all himself. 🥰 It’s cash only and he has no internet. He sadly told us his business used to be really busy back in 1991 when he opened but has slowed way down since the digital wave. So, like any good millennials would do we started an appreciation Instagram for him. @tomsonehourphotolab 🌹 Not sure he’ll even see this. Stop by, tell all your friends, and don’t forget to tag. Let’s keep this charming business afloat! #TomsOneHourPhoto
Musgraves continued to share info about Tom’s to her 800,000-plus Twitter followers in a series of tweets, revealing that the owner admitted business was slow so she and her sister set him up on Instagram.
Musgraves then shared the story with the audience at her show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, sending a shout-out to her new favourite business. Video of the moment wound up being posted on the new Instagram account of Tom’s One Hour Photo & Lab, which she had just set up.
As Rolling Stone reveals, Musgraves’ social media efforts have resulted in an explosion of business for the store and its fledgling Instagram account, which has racked up more than 40,000 followers in the few days since its launch.
According to store owner Tom Tuong, his phone hasn’t stopped ringing since Musgraves began posting about him, telling RS he’s so busy that his wife, who works at a nail salon, has to come help out on her days off in order to keep up with all the demand.
Meanwhile, RS reports that five people were lined up on Thursday morning to have their portraits taken, including actress Maude Apatow (daughter of “Trainwreck” director Judd Apatow), who arrived right as the store opened.
“It’s normally busy here, but when something happens like this, it’s a nice surprise,” Tuong tells RS.
“Because she didn’t tell me she was a singer, I just thought she was a regular customer,” he adds. “She looked like she was having fun, she thought the photos were nice — I was just happy that she liked it. If the customer is happy, I’m happy, too.”
