Olivia Colman’s Eyes Are Causing Difficulties For ‘The Crown’ Crew

Getting every little historic fact right in Netflix’s “The Crown” is no easy task, but it turned out that Olivia Colman’s eyes caused the most issues.

Queen Elizabeth has famously cool blue eyes and luckily for the first two seasons of the show Claire Foy’s eyes were also blue so no work was needed. But as Colman took on the iconic role for the third and fourth season, the crew ran into issues with her brown eyes.

While this would seem like a minor detail, Netflix has gone into great length to have every little thing correct.

An easy fix would be blue contacts (which they tried) but the lenses made it look like “she was acting behind a mask,” director Ben Caron told The Guardian.

He added, “It was as if we had taken all of her acting ability and put it in a safe and locked it away.”

From there CGI technology was used to alter Colman’s eye colour after filming. “But it didn’t feel like her,” Caron said. “CGI-ing her eyes seemed to diminish what she was doing.”

After going through every possible measure, the creative team decided that one little detail wouldn’t take away from the show’s entirety.

Season three of “The Crown” hits Netflix on Nov. 17.
