Nick Jonas was almost in a coma during his early adolescence.
The Jonas Brothers member opens up to Cigar Aficionado about being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 13. “I was very close to a coma. Like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital,” Jonas reflects. “I kept asking my parents — ‘am I going to be okay?’”
Fortunately, Jonas bounced back strong and it turned into a heartthrob entertainer with a love for cigars: “One of the things a lot of people say to me is: ‘You’re so young to like cigars.’ It’s a narrative that I’m aware of, and actually, something that I love being able to speak to.”
“I think that cigars as a whole should be something that you share with friends,” he says. “There shouldn’t be any barriers around who can enjoy them.” The publication notes Jonas is the youngest celebrity to ever be featured with a cigar on the cover of Cigar Aficionado.
He also touches on initiating the Jonas Brothers split in 2013. “I kind of ripped [off] that Band-Aid,” he says. “At the time, I thought that would have been the best way to do it… it nearly complicated our relationship as family to an irreversible point. Thankfully, it didn’t.”
The October cover story of Cigar Aficionado is on newsstands Sept. 24.
