‘All My Children’ Alum Cameron Mathison Is ‘Unbelievably Grateful’ To Be Home Post-Surgery Amid Cancer Battle

Actor Cameron Mathison, known for co-hosting Entertainment Tonight and his 14-year stint as Ryan Lavery on “All My Children”, had some unsettling news for fans this week.

“I have a health situation that I want to share with you all,” wrote the native of Sarnia, Ont., in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“About a month ago, I had an MRI for some gut issues I’ve been having, and during that MRI they found a tumour on my right kidney,” divulged Mathison, 50. “It’s consistent with renal cell carcinoma… or kidney cancer.”

According to Mathison, his doctors believe the tumour has “been growing in me for minimum 10 years,” but that his “healthy lifestyle and diet has no doubt helped keep it from growing and spreading to other areas,” writing: “The good news is that it hasn’t spread to any other organs… I am extremely lucky that we found it early.”

Mathison, who currently co-hosts Hallmark Channel’s “Home and Family” talk show, thanked his wife, Vanessa Arevalo and their children, along with his urologist, and colleagues at “Home and Family” and ET, and asked fans for their “positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you feel comfortable with” when he has surgery to remove the rumour on Thursday, Sept. 12.

I have a health situation that I want to share with you all🙏🏼 There are many reasons I love social media, staying connected with you all, sharing fun experiences… well this time I’m asking for your help. About a month ago, I had an MRI for some gut issues I’ve been having, and during that MRI they found a tumor on my right kidney. It’s consistent with Renal Cell Carcinoma … or kidney cancer. The good news is that it hasn’t spread to any other organs🙏🏼 They say my healthy lifestyle and diet has no doubt helped keep it from growing and spreading to other areas, as doctors think it’s been growing in me for minimum 10 years🙏🏼. I am extremely lucky that we found it early. Thank you to my longtime friend and urologist @jon_giddens who has helped me tremendously through this process. Vanessa, Lucas and Leila have been absolutely amazing with their love and support… as have my mom, dad, brother, and everyone at Home and Family, Hallmark, and ET❤️ My surgery is scheduled on September 12th, I was hoping to receive positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you feel comfortable with, on 9/12 (my surgery is at 1pm PST) 🙏🏼 I announced this on @homeandfamilytv yesterday, and wanted to make sure I posted about it here as well. Feeling very grateful and optimistic!! 💪🏼🙏🏼❤️ #thankyou yes

Mathison initially broke the news during “Home and Family” on Monday, telling viewers that he had been experiencing some persistent gut issues “that weren’t making a whole lot of sense to me,” that led him to consult his doctor and ask for an MRI.

“So here’s the deal, everybody,” he announced on the air, revealing he was going to be having “minimally invasive” laparoscopic surgery” to remove the tumour, avoiding chemotherapy or radiation.

Joking about how long he’ll be off the job to recover, Mathison quipped, “They say a week to two weeks, so I’m thinking… five days?”

He then gave fans an update on how the surgery went Friday, insisting he got to keep 80 per cent of his kidney.

After a four-day stay at the hospital, Mathison is back home and took to Instagram to thank Keck Medicine of USC in Southern California, along with all his family, friends and fans.

Many of Mathison’s celebrity friends commented on the post, including Kelly Ripa, Catherine Bell, Bindi Irwin, Faith Ford, Jen Lilley, Lacey Chabert and Danica McKellar, as they showed their continued support for the TV personality and his family.

Josh Duhamel wrote, “So happy it all went well. You are truly a fighter and have been your whole life. Love you buddy.”
