Alicia Silverstone’s efforts were for nought when she brought a reusable mug into Starbucks.
The actress ordered a Starbucks coffee in her own reusable mug on Tuesday as a method to reduce waste. She was shocked to notice the barista pouring the coffee into a disposable cup and then into her mug.
“Depressing! Just brought my reusable mug to Starbucks and saw staff use a disposable cup, pour it into my mug, then toss the disposable cup,” she tweeted. “Totally defeats the purpose of trying to reduce waste.”
“Then I looked around to see so many people sitting at the cafe all with disposables!” Silverstone continued. “Ugh.”
One user on Twitter, who apparently works at Starbucks, explained the use of disposable cups as a sanitation issue. “It makes no sense but it’s our policy,” the user tweeted. “Even if you are in the cafe and come up get a refill, we are technically supposed to throw your cup away and give you a new one.”
A Starbucks representative told People they encourage partners to use reusable cups “whenever possible” and offer customers a 10 cent discount for bringing their own tumbler. Silverstone had more to complain about than just the disposable cups, read below.
