Lady Gaga would not be Lady Gaga if it were not for the power of makeup.
Gaga, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, opens up about her “deep visceral” connection to makeup in the 2019 “Best of Beauty” edition of Allure.
“When I became Lady Gaga when I was younger, it was because I discovered makeup,” she says. “It means so much to me on a deep visceral level — the power of makeup to change how you feel when you’re at your lowest.
“I never felt beautiful, and I still have days that I don’t feel beautiful,” Gaga continues. “The insecurities that I’ve dealt with my whole life from being bullied… they come right back… Then I put makeup on, and before I know it I feel this superhero within. It gives me those wings to fly.”
Gaga, 33, launched new Haus Laboratories makeup line this month.
“I want people to feel completely liberated by this line, to do whatever they want with it. Whether they wear a ton of it, buy it — or don’t. I just want them to love the message.”
“I would like all gender identities to know very clearly that they are included, and never exploited, ever,” Gaga assures. “I want the same thing that I’ve had in my concerts to happen with this company. If I’m not changing people’s lives, what are we doing here?”
Allure’s 23rd annual “Best of Beauty” issue is called “Lady Gaga: The Power of Makeup”.
