It is an “American Idol” reunion on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”.
Kelly Clarkson welcomed her “American Idol” judges from season 1 — Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson — to Wednesday’s episode of her new talk show. Host Ryan Seacrest was unable to make the appearance live but did drop in via satellite.
“I actually genuinely do not believe we would be sitting here today if you hadn’t entered the show that day,” Cowell told Clarkson. “The whole premise of this show was, we had to find a star who was going to sell records.
“We found some great people that whole year but when you delivered that moment on that first live show and when you sang that winning song at the end…,” Cowell continued.
Abdul added, “It was a game-changer.”
Jackson remembers the exact moment that “American Idol” clicked: “We looked at each other at the end of the finale and said, ‘Wow, this thing is really going to work.’ I think that is the moment that we knew.”
Clarkson revealed how she and fellow finalist Justin Guarini were informed about their duet minutes before going live on television. “They told Justin and I [that] we were doing that duet… like three minutes before live national television started,” she said. “We were both standing there like, ‘What?'”
The inaugural season of “American Idol” aired June-September 2002.
