Christina Applegate may not have won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy on Sunday, but she certainly won the Internet with her responses during an awkward interview with Jenny McCarthy.
Nominated for her Netflix series “Dead To Me”, Applegate was unimpressed with McCarthy’s red carpet questions on Fox’s live Emmys pre-show.
The “Masked Singer” panelist seemed to be utterly unaware that Applegate had been nominated twice in the Lead Actress in a Comedy category for her show “Samantha Who?”. In addition, Applegate previously won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on “Friends” — a fact that had apparently escaped McCarthy.
“I know you were nominated for ‘Friends’ being a guest star role, tonight you’re nominated for your show, first time, right? Lead actress?” she asked the star.
“Well, no, no,” Applegate replied, pursing her lips and looking off to the side. “‘Samantha Who?’ a couple of times, but that’s okay. We don’t have to talk about that.”
The awkwardness didn’t stop there.
McCarthy then told Applegate she “grew up” watching Applegate on “Married… With Children” and wanted to be just like her when she was older. However, Applegate is just a year older than McCarthy.
Applegate continued down the carpet to throw some shade at E! host Giuliana Rancic.
In an uncomfortable moment, Rancic asked Applegate to give a shout-out to her daughter Sadie watching at home.
“I don’t think she’s watching E!,” Applegate bluntly replied.
