A soulful singer’s blind audition on the new season of “The Voice” resulted in a playful clash between coaches Gwen Stefani and Kelly Clarkson.
It all started on Tuesday’s edition of NBC’s hit singing competition, when 20-year-old Utah contestant James Violet took to the stage to perform a cover of Harry Styles’ “Sweet Creature”.
As Clarkson pointed out, she was the only one of the four coaches who recognized his song choice, interjecting, “Harry Styles, great record, I love it,” after fellow coach Stefani admitted, “I don’t know that song.”
However, Stefani was quick to point out that simply recognizing a song does not equate to being the best coach to nurture the singer’s talent.
“That doesn’t mean that she’s a good coach ’cause she knows a song, okay?” Stefani responded.
“Now we’re gettin’ chilly!” jibed coach John Legend, which prompted Stefani to “take it back,” which appeared to fire up Clarkson’s competitive streak.
“Don’t take it back! I love this,” declared Clarkson of battling with Stefani. “Okay, let’s go,” joked Stefani, standing up, while Clarkson did the same while pulling out her earring. “I’m taking my earrings off,” she quipped.
“Am I blowing it right now?” asked Stefani, who definitely was not, as Violet chose her to guide him through the rest of the season.
