When it was announced that Dave Grohl would be the one who inducted Rush into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, there was a collective “perfect,”; followed by a “hell yeah,”; followed by “awesome,”; from die hard Rush fans. The reason Rush was inducted this year was because of fans and it was fitting that a huge fan, like Dave, was given the honour.
Dave did what most, if not all Rush fans would have done – he Fan Boy’d, named off every single Rush album in chronological order and was just the right amount of humble, if not terrified, that he’d soon be asked to perform a track from one of the most insanely technical bands of all time.
During his speech, Dave said: “From day one, the band built its following the right way. No hype, no bullsh*t, they did it from the ground up without any help from the mainstream press. Their influence is undeniable and their devoted fan base is only rivaled by the Grateful Dead. Look at you people, all of you people, right here! And their legacy is that of a band that stayed true to themselves no matter how uncool they may have seemed to anyone.”;
During the show Geddy thanked “the most passionate, incredible fan base around the globe… for the insistence of their voices, which has most certainly led us to this evening.”;
On the carpet before the show I got to have my Fan Boy moment. Like true Rock Stars, Rush showed up last, but like good Canadian boys – they stayed the longest.
Three things you should know about my exclusive interview with the guys… ONE: Neil still, to this day, finds himself air drumming. TWO: No, the term Slappin Da Bass doesn’t drive them nuts. They love it. THREE: Even on a warm Hollywood night, minutes before they’d be immortalized in Rock N’ Roll history, the only question Geddy and Alex had was how their beloved Blue Jays did that afternoon… they won.
And so did Rush fans…
