They weren’t the first and certainly not the last, but Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone once both battled to win Princess Diana’s heart during a dinner party hosted by Sir Elton John.
In John’s new memoir Me, he details the dinner that he and David Furnish held for Disney chief Jeffrey Katzenberg at the time that the singer was writing songs for “The Lion King”.
Gere was recently separated from Cindy Crawford and Diana from Prince Charles. As John tells it, the two were seated fireside, deep in conversation when Stallone spotted them and became jealous.
When dinner started, everyone sat down minus Gere and Stallone who stepped out “apparently about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fist-fight,” an expert from the book reads.
Post dinner, Gere continued to woo Diana which upset the “Rocky” star even further.
“‘I never would have come,’ he snapped, as David and I showed him to the door, ‘if I’d known Prince f***in’ Charming was gonna be here.’ Then he added: ‘If I’d wanted her, I would’ve taken her!’” John writes.
Although Diana was “completely unruffled” by everything going on. “Maybe she hadn’t realised [sic] what was happening,” John adds. “Or maybe stuff like that happened all the time and she was used to it.”
Me will hit bookshelves on Oct. 15.
