Jameela Jamil is looking back at a dark time in her life.
“The Good Place” actress took to Instagram on #WorldMentalHealthDay to open up about her past suicide attempt.
“Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay,” she wrote on Twitter. “This month, six years ago, I tried to take my own life. I’m so lucky that I survived, and went on to use EMDR [eye movement desensitization and reprocessing] to treat my severe PTSD. I urge you to hang on just a bit longer and ask for help if you need it. Because things can turn around. I promise.”
She added, “There is so much work to do in Improving awareness and mental health care, and we need to further de-stigmatize the conversation around asking for help.”
Jamil has been very vocal about her mental health struggles, using her platform to help put an end to the stigma. She’s also been outspoken on weight-loss supplements and other unhealthy practices.
The fourth and final season of Global’s “The Good Place” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
