Filming on James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is currently underway in Atlanta, and some photos have emerged from the set of the DC Comics-derived film that offer our first glimpse of the new team of super villains recruited to undertake a heroic mission.
More a reboot/reimagining than a sequel of director David Ayers’ critically reviled 2016 flick “Suicide Squad”, Gunn’s film will reportedly keep what worked in the earlier movie (i.e. Margot Robbie’s explosive Harley Quinn, along with Jai Courtenay as Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag) and ditch what didn’t (pretty much everything else).
As a result, there are several new cast members, including Idris Elba (who’ll be taking over the role of Deadshot, played by Will Smith in the first film), Nathan Fillion (“The Rookie”), “SNL” cast member Pete Davidson and German comedian Flula Borg.
On Friday, photos from the set emerged that showcase the new colourfully costumed cast, with Davidson believed to be playing Blackguard, a super villain whose strength derives from his high-tech suit.
The photos quickly made the rounds on social media, and opinion seems to be divided, with some fans liking what they see and others… not so much.
“The Suicide Squad” is set to be released on Aug. 1, 2021.
