Mariah Carey is not pleased about reports that she mixed up two A-list female stars during her speech at Variety‘s Power of Women luncheon on Friday.
The 49-year-old songstress was being honoured for her work with The Fresh Air Fund’s Camp Mariah, and during her speech she experienced a technical difficulty when the teleprompter went out mid-speech.
In fact, Carey joked with the audience that she had a feeling the teleprompter would fail. “This prompter thing?” she said. “I predicted it.”
She added: “This is why I have cue cards because I was watching Reese Witherspoon doing her speech — I am completely off speech right now — why can’t it be the one that’s right in front of you? Oh Lord, well I will just get into it and trust these prompters will work.”
As the Daily Mail and other media outlets reported, Witherspoon was not among this year’s honourees. In fact, it was Jennifer Aniston who had spoken prior to Carey, leading to headlines that Carey had confused the two actresses.
However, Carey later took to Twitter to slam the reports, telling the outlets, “That’s idiotic… YOU’RE mistaken & didn’t do research. Trust me, I know the difference. I KNOW them. If this is your takeaway from an event that celebrates women, shame on you!”
She also shared a video of Witherspoon’s speech from the 2014 Power of Women event — explaining it was that speech she was referring to,
