Ellen is giving us a glimpse inside her star-studded “Gorillapalooza” fundraiser.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, the talk show host and gorilla activist shared some clips from her exclusive first official fundraising event for the Ellen Fund, which included performances by Chris Martin and Bruno Mars, hosted by DeGeneres’ wife Portia de Rossi.
“It was a big deal for me because there are only two things that can get me out of the house on a Saturday night,” she joked. “That is helping animals or an open bar.”
On a more serious note, Ellen sent best wishes to Miley Cyrus who was supposed to perform but was rushed to the hospital due to tonsillitis.
The evening also included a live auction hosted by Ellen and James Corden.
“It’s always awkward to ask people for money so we wanted to make it as laid back and casual as possible while we asked for money,” she explained. “When that didn’t work out, James Corden just yelled at people.”
One thing that surprised Ellen was the hype over tickets to her “12 Days of Giveaways” show that she auctioned off.
“I had no idea how very rich celebrities would go crazy over free stuff,” she said while talking about the bidding war between Julia Roberts and Sofia Vergara.
Ellen announced that the fundraiser earned over $5 million in support of the endangered animals, as there are only 1,000 mountain gorillas left. The goal of “Gorillapalooza” was to raise money and awareness for the Ellen Fund, which supports endangered species, and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda – a centre for education, tourism, and further scientific research.
