‘Stranger Things’ Sets Netflix Viewing Record, Watched By 64 Million Households

The third season of “Stranger Things” was not only the most-watched season of the Netflix supernatural thriller but also the streamer’s most-viewed original series ever.

According to data in Netflix’s quarterly earnings report, via The Hollywood Reporter, the most recent season of “Stranger Things” was viewed by more than 64 million households within four weeks of its July 4 premiere, easily surpassing viewership of any other Netflix original series (in its criteria, Netflix counts a “view” as a member household watching at least 70 per cent of one episode of a series, or 70 per cent of a feature film).

This staggering new figure builds on earlier viewership info released shortly after the third season’s release, with Netflix announcing in July that 40.7 million member accounts watched season 3 within a week of its debut, setting a viewership record for the shortest amount of time for any Netflix original to amass such a huge audience.

Meanwhile, Nielsen has reported that U.S. viewership of the third season of “Stranger Things” attracted 21 per cent more viewers in its first four days than the second season.

Not surprisingly, “Stranger Things” has been renewed for a fourth season, and while plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, a cryptic trailer for the upcoming season debuted late last month, bearing the tagline, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.”
