HBO has just dropped the first full trailer for an upcoming murder mystery with a supernatural twist, based on a bestseller by Stephen King.
“The Outsider” is a 10-episode series adapted from the Master of Horror’s novel of the same name, following the story of police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) as he investigates the murder of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson, whose mutilated body was found in the Georgia woods.
The evidence points to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), whose fingerprints are discovered all over the crime scene, but there’s a catch: closed-circuit television footage and several eyewitnesses place him in a different location at the time of the crime, 60 miles away.

To help get to the bottom of this incongruous mystery, Ralph brings in an unorthodox private investigator (Cynthia Erivo), who possesses some inexplicable abilities that he hopes will explain the unexplainable.
Other members of the cast include Bill Camp, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson, Yul Vázquez, Jeremy Bobb and Marc Menchaca.
“The 10-episode series follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods,” reads the official synopsis. “The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.”
“The Outsider” will debut on Jan. 12, 2020.
