Barney is headed to the big screen.
Deadline reports the lovable purple dinosaur is set to become a movie star in a new live-action project developed by “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya and his production company, in conjunction with Mattel.
“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” Kaluuya, 30, announced. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”
“Barney And Freinds” was a staple of PBS in the 1990s for 14 seasons. The show featured the singing and dancing dino preaching love and kindness to kids and selling millions in related merch.
The Barney movie joins other projects in the works that are based on nostalgia-driven Mattel toys, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, American Girl, Masters Of The Universe, Magic 8 Ball and View Master.
