Rock ‘n’ roll stories don’t get weirder — or more heartwarming — than the wild ride that culminated with Weezer’s surprisingly non-ironic cover of Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa”.
The whole thing started when a Cleveland teenager (and Weezer super fan) named Mary heard the track when it was used in “Stranger Things” and became obsessed with the idea of having her favourite band cover her new favourite song.
As a a result, she launched a Twitter account devoted to convincing the band to cover the song, launching a relentless campaign that ultimately succeeded when Weezer released its cover in May 2018.
Amazingly enough, Weezer’s “Africa” cover became a huge hit, earning the band a gold record — which they generously gifted to Mary to celebrate her dedication in convincing them to record the song in the first place.
Mary took to her famed Twitter account to thank the band for sending her the gold album, admitting it “was absolutely crazy.”
Meanwhile, no mention of Weezer’s “Africa” would be complete without offering a chance to view the bonkers music video the band created for the song, featuring the inimitable Weird Al Yankovic. Enjoy!
