Karamo Brown and his dad are making up for lost time.
The “Queer Eye” star dedicated his “Dancing with the Stars” performance on Monday to his dad, with whom his relationship was torn apart when Brown came out as gay as a teen.
“Growing up, my father was my hero. He called me his champion son,” he said on the dance show. “But then, as I started to discover who I am, things changed dramatically. When I was 17 going on 18, I told him that I was gay. Our relationship ended.”
“It split the family apart and we didn’t speak for 10 years,” Brown continued. “I just prayed every day that one day, we could actually get back to being a family again.”
It took a decade but it finally happened: “[My dad] reached out to me and was looking to apologize for what had happened. And we really just started to reconcile our relationship.”
Following his successful 25/30 performance on “DWTS”, Brown embraced his dad onstage.
“When I was younger, I wanted to walk like you, talk like you, be like you,” Brown told his dad ahead of the performance. “And the relationship I have with you has been a driving force in every single part of who I am.”
“Ever since birth, I’ve always wanted for you to be successful,” his dad replied.
Brown’s father agreed to meet the “Queer Eye” star’s fiance, Ian Jordan.
“Why not?” his dad said. Brown only had one condition: “If there’s anything I expect from my father, it’s just learning how to love me unconditionally.”
