Apple TV+ is launching Friday, and Oprah Winfrey fans have a lot to look forward to.

In a preview clip from the first instalment of “Oprah’s Book Club”, the TV host sits down with author Ta-Nehisi Coates to discuss he debut novel The Water Dancer.

The book tells the story of Hiram Walker, a man born into slavery, following his journey out from a plantation and into the dangerous abolitionist movements in the American north. Enlisted into the underground railroad, Hiram attempts to free the family he left behind from bondage.

Winfrey and Coates discuss the use of dehumanizing language by people and politicians in the present.

“I find that people generally want to look back at history that makes them feel good about themselves,” Coates says of his decision to set his book in the past and deal with more difficult truths of history.

According to Apple, “A new episode will be available every two months. For every ‘Oprah’s Book Club’ selection sold on Apple Books, Apple will make a contribution to the American Library Association to support local libraries, fund programs that give access to everyone and create lifelong readers at an early age.”
