John Cena and new girlfriend Shay Shariatzadeh recently made their red carpet debut as a couple, leading some to comment on her resemblance to the WWE star’s ex-fiancee Nikki Bella.
Cena, 42, dropped by the fourth hour of the “Today” show on Thursday to chat with Hoda Kotb and Andy Cohen, filling in for regular co-host Jenna Bush Hager.
After chatting about his new comedy “Playing with Fire”, Cohen hit Cena with a curveball of a question, asking, “Does she kind of not look like your ex as well?”
“Thank you so much for asking that question,” Cena responded politely with just a hint of sarcasm, “but I’ll keep that as your question and keep those details to myself.”
He added: “I can say with great confidence I’m extremely happy.”
Cohen, however, continued his line of questioning. “But let me ask you this: You were on a reality show with your ex, so I have to assume with this one you are taking baby steps towards making it public, since you went so far in the other direction?”
“Every experience in life is a chance for us to know who we are and who we’re not, and just because I went down one avenue in life doesn’t mean I’m going to repeat going down that avenue. I think if there is a learning experience for me and a takeaway for me, it’s okay to be who you are and it’s okay to establish boundaries,” Cena replied.
“Just because a precedent was set doesn’t mean you need to follow that precedent, as long as you take ownership of who you are,” he added. “If you’ve done something before and it doesn’t really mesh with who you are, it’s okay to change. It’s okay to develop and grow, and that’s the journey of life.”
