A second interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby hits theatres next weekend, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, but how does the reboot compare to the 1974 version?  We recently sat down with the cast of the film to find out.

For Gatsby himself, Leonardo, watching the original was a chance to learn from Robert Redford’s interpretation of the film. Aside from the fact that Leo thinks “every Baz Luhrmann film is an event,”; he is sure that the reboot is “certainly different than the 1974 version.”;

Baz opened up about how he decided to portray Gatsby’s life on the big screen again, saying that he learned a lot from the original.  “Redford wanted to put more of a back story in the ’70s version,”; he says. “I read this in the making-of book and he was right I think,”; the director continues, “so we learned from that.”;

Tobey Maguire, who’s also seen the original, was more on the fence about how the two films stack up.  “The look and feel are very different,”; the actor says but, “they’re different interpretations in that way, but they’re interpretations of the same material.”;

Now even though Baz’s Gatsby and Nick Carraway did their research, the ladies in the film steered clear of the original.

“I avoided it like the plague,”; Carey Mulligan said.  “I’m the biggest Mia Farrow fan and I thought if I watched it I’ll just copy her unconsciously,”; the actress confessed.   And Isla Fisher had a similar reaction, “I saw it after we shot out movie and I’m really glad I did,”; the actress and mother-of-two said, “I would have been overwhelmed.”;
