Sterling K. Brown shares a treasured, deeply emotional memory from his personal life when he sits down with Willie Geist on this week’s “Sunday Today”.
Discussing his new film “Waves”, in which the “This Is Us” star portrays a father struggling to raise his teenage son, he reflects on the relationship he had with his own father, who passed away when he was just 10.
“I think the whole dynamic of fathers and sons is one that resonates with me, and is resonating really strong right now,” Brown tells Geist. “My dad was 45 when he passed away, and I was 10.”
Reflecting on the day his father died, Brown remembers some “really specific things.”
“Waking up that morning and going into the kitchen and my mom being on the phone and calling the paramedics, and asking me to put clothes on my dad, ‘cause he was naked in the bed,” Brown tells Geist. “And his body was stiff. And as they’re carrying him out on the stretcher, he looks at me over the railing, and he winks. Just winks. They carry him out the door — last time I saw him.”
Added the actor: “I will say this, about Sterling Brown Jr.: He filled me up with so much love. So while the time was short, it was everything that I could’ve hoped for for 10 years.”
Geist’s full interview with Brown will air on “Sunday Today with Willie Geist” on Sunday, Nov. 17.
