In another universe, Chadwick Boseman might have played a very different Marvel hero.

Appearing on “The Tonight Show”, the “Black Panther” star revealed to host Jimmy Fallon that before starring in the Best Picture nominee, he auditioned to play Drax in “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

“It’s about going in, I didn’t think I was going to get it, and it’s weird too because it’s a testament to Marvel – each film… has a different tone,” Boseman said of the audition process. “We didn’t know what ‘Guardians’ was going to be.

“I didn’t know what it was, I only had a few pages at that time so it was good to come in and play to see what they did with it.”

The role of Drax would go to Dave Bautista.

“Sometimes that’s the way it works as an actor,” Boseman said. “You know you’re not going to get it but you’re meeting the people – they might be like, ‘It’s not this, but we’ll put him in this other thing.'”

Also on the show, Boseman took part in a new edition of “Freestylin’ with the Roots”, suggesting the band do an on-the-spot rap about “Black Panther” in the style of 21 Savage.
