Normani will make sure you know she’s black.
The former Fifth Harmony member details how her culture and art intertwine in a new feature for Cosmopolitan. Everything from her records to her music video will exude blackness.
“Those women before me, I wanna finish what they started,” Normani says. “I’m gonna make whatever I do black. You’ll know that I’m a black girl, even if it’s on the quote-unquote whitest record ever.”
A perfect example of this is Normani’s music video for “Perfection”, which has generated more than 69 million views in three months.
“I told the director, ‘I want this to be as black as possible.’ I was like, let’s show black culture,” she explains. “Why does pop music have to be so white? Why don’t we make it a little bit more me?”
The singer also dishes on the intersection in her life between self-worth and self-realization: “I’m not sure what that turning point was, but I was like, Normani is enough. You can be on stage and perform and you can be enough.”
To date, Normani’s only project as a solo artist is her Normani x Calvin Harris extended play with the Scottish DJ.
