E.T. is phoning home again.
Everyone’s favourite extraterrestrial (sorry, ALF!), is back in the new short film advert “Holiday Reunion”. The Xfinity 2019 campaign reunites E.T. with a grown-up Elliott, played by original “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” actor Henry Thomas.
A two-minute version was presented on NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day. It will also run during movie theatre pre-shows and Syfy’s airings of “E.T.”
“The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people’s minds and hearts,” Thomas said in a statement published by Deadline.
The original movie is considered one of the greatest films of all time. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie generated more than $790 million at the box office against a $10.5 million budget.
People loved the short so much that Comcast released a six-minute behind-the-scenes featurette on how they made the reunion.
“It’s Steven Spielberg’s baby,” Thomas said in the making-of featurette. “He’s very particular about this film. So I’ve always viewed any attempt to revamp the character or showing it in a different context as a thing that’s never going to happen.”
