Elton John opened up about his extraordinary life for his recent memoir Me, and now he’s revealing even more in an intimate BBC special, “Elton John: Uncensored”, in which he’s interviewed by U.K. talk show host Graham Norton.
At one point in the interview, reports the The Guardian, the 72-year-old rocker reveals that beneath his flashy stage garb he was wearing an adult diaper during a 2017 concert, and the audience was none the wiser.
As he explains, he underwent surgery for prostate cancer just two weeks earlier, which temporarily left him with no bladder control.
“If only they knew, at that moment I was p***ing myself,” he jokes about the crowd at that show.
In the candid interview, he also explains his decision to wear a wig. “I don’t like being bald. I look like Shrek,” he insists, admitting he disagreed with criticism of his 1980s-era rug. “They said it looked like a dead squirrel. More like a dead mole,” he joked.
You can check out a clip from the interview below, in which the “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” singer dishes about some of his rock rivalries, and regales Norton with an anecdote about John Lennon refusing to let Sir Elton answer a hotel room door when Andy Warhol was outside knocking on the door.
