Breakout star Forky is a key player in Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year.
While climate change and gun violence were contributing factors that helped “existential” earn the Word of the Year title, the angsty “Toy Story 4” character gave the word a spotlight in one of the year’s biggest films.
According to Dictionary.com, existential is an adjective that means “of relating to existence.”
Forky, the hilarious fan favourite character, relates to the word in the film as he’s convinced his destiny is trash but with the help of cowboy Woody, he embraces his purpose as a treasured toy of owner Bonnie.
“Forky underscores how this sense of grappling can also inspire us to ask big questions about who we are, about our purpose,” John Kelly, senior research editor for the site told The Associated Press.
He added, “In our data, it speaks to this sense of grappling with our survival, both literally and figuratively, that defined so much of the discourse.”
