Rose Short of Team Gwen was the first to take the stage, and she wowed the judges with a stunning, soulful cover of Blake’s latest hit, “God’s Country.”
So, how did she come up with the performance? During the week’s rehearsals, Gwen asked how Rose came to choose “my boy’s song” for her next cover. Turns out, she got it from her mama!
Rose’s parents, Tyrone and Evelyn, were in Los Angeles visiting their daughter over the holiday, and Evelyn suggested “God’s Country” to Rose, who said she related to the song as a military brat, who spent part of her childhood in Texas, developing a love for country music.
“This song is a super special song, because Blake is all about his land. He’s literally plowing the fields,” Gwen told the family of the track, for which Blake recently received his ninth GRAMMY nomination. “He put this on and just stopped everything and was like, ‘I need to record this.’ It’s the biggest song I think he’s ever had.”
And the No Doubt frontwomen is confident that her beau’s hit is going to prop Rose to the next level of the competition — and perhaps Team Gwen’s first-ever victory. “We are going to win ‘The Voice’ with Blake Shelton’s song!”
Rose’s cover certainly earned Blake’s seal of approval. The country star even bowed down to the former corrections officer after her performance, as the two commiserated over what a difficult song it is to sing.
“When she sings it, it doesn’t seem that hard,” he exclaimed. “You were killing it, my gosh!…Was that the same song? That was incredible!”
“It felt very meant to be,” Gwen agreed. “Beautiful and perfect for this moment right after Thanksgiving and family. So proud of you.”
The couple spoke to ET last week ahead of their Thanksgiving holiday, where Stefani and fellow coach John Legend joked about Blake being the first coach this season to have his team reduced to two hopeful singers.
“He’s floundering this season,” Stefani laughed of her beau.
“You know what’s happening? She’s his weakness,” Legend guessed of having the country star’s lady love back on the singing competition after a few seasons away.
“I’m like the kryptonite,” Stefani joked.
