Princess Anne became the talk of Twitter this week after seemingly refusing to greet Donald Trump during his Buckingham Palace visit.
The Queen, Prince Charles, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, all shook the president’s hand during the reception for Nato leaders Tuesday. However, as Her Majesty beckoned over to her daughter by the doorway, she simply shrugged.
There was no shade, however, according to a royal reporter present for the exchanges. Valentine Low explained on Twitter how the whole thing was misconstrued.
“The Queen, after greeting the Donald (and the Melania), turned to Anne to see who was next,” Low wrote. “But there wasn’t anyone waiting: Trump was the last leader to be received by the Queen.”
“Anne raised her hands in the air, laughed and said: ‘It’s just me,’ adding a moment later ‘and this lot’ as she pointed to the members of the household behind her,” he added.
The meeting had everybody talking online. See some of the reactions below.
Before the reception, Donald and First Lady Melania had tea with Charles and Camilla at Clarence House.
Other world leaders in attendance at the reception included Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau.
Kate Middleton also attended the gathering solo, as Prince William is currently on a royal visit to Kuwait and Oman.
