One of Britain’s most beloved TV comedies is making a comeback — just in time for the holidays.
Premiering in 2007, “Gavin and Stacey” followed the relationship of the titular couple (played by Matthew Horne and Joanna Page), which encountered the usual romantic road bumps — made even bumpier by their eccentric families.
Also starring were James Corden as Gavin’s best friend, Smithy, and Ruth Jones as Stacey’s BFF Nessa (Corden and Jones created and wrote the show).
Given that Corden is a little busy these days as the host of a hit late-night talk show, it seemed unlikely that a revival would happen, but it did and it’s finally here, 10 years in the making, with a new trailer unveiled today.
“It’s been 10 years since we last went to Billericay to spend Christmas with the Shipmans and the Wests,” reads the official synopsis. “This year we’re off to Wales for the festivities, where Bryn’s cooking dinner for over 13 people. Understandably he’s tense. Pam would secretly prefer to spend Christmas in Essex as she finds Gwen’s house a bit lacking. But the deal has always been that they alternate every year and this time it’s the turn of the Wests to host Christmas with everyone under one small roof. For Gavin and Stacey, parenthood continues to present them with several challenges, their ‘baby’ now being 10.”
The synopsis continues: “Smithy continues to commit to his fatherly role too, making the journey to Barry at weekends and every second Wednesday to see 12-year-old Neil the Baby. Nessa, on the other hand, adopts her own brand of Nessa-style mothering whilst Pam, Mick and Gwen have become the epitome of doting grandparents. On Christmas Eve, Dawn makes a shocking discovery about Pete that jeopardizes their marriage (again) and a visit to the pub that night is an eye-opener in more ways than one.”
The new “Gavin and Stacey” Christmas special will premiere on Christmas Day on streaming service Britbox, when all three seasons of the series will also be available to stream.
