Canadian country musicians Eric Ethridge and Kalsey Kulyk have tied the knot!
The singers wed in a gorgeous seaside ceremony at the Haven Riviera Cancun in Mexico on Tuesday and were still on a high as ET Canada caught up with them the next day.
“It was more beautiful than I could have imagined,” gushed Ontario native Ethridge, who wore a beige Botto Giuseppe suit as he watched Kulyk walk down the aisle in a beautiful lace gown by Scout Bridal and spike-encrusted, white Christian Louboutins.
“She had been showing people pictures of her dress for a month, so I was just dying to see her in it. Watching her walk down the aisle was something I’d imagined for a long time and it exceeded my wildest expectations.”
“She’s the most beautiful bride – and woman – I’ve ever seen,” continued the 30-year-old singer. “It was a moment of shock, thinking, I cannot believe this is the woman I get to marry. It was magical.”
The singers met in a songwriting session in 2017 after Ethridge reached out to Kulyk and other finalists in the Canadian Country Music Association’s Discovery Program, having won the award the previous year. He and Kulyk (who then won the 2017 award) started dating a year ago and got engaged in Banff while celebrating her 29th birthday in August.
“We were touring Canada, but on opposite sides of the country and Eric called saying, ‘I’m coming over for your birthday. Want to go to Banff?’” recalls Kulyk, who didn’t suspect a proposal when Ethridge woke up on her birthday eager to test out his prized new drone.
“We were on the side of a mountain and he showed me [footage] from the drone connected to his phone, then said, ‘Hold on. I’ve got to grab a cable.’ Then I saw him on one knee in the footage! He totally surprised me.”
With their musical dreams keeping them busy (Ethridge gave up his medical career and released his debut EP in 2018, while Kulyk recently released the “Damn You Love” from her self-titled debut) the couple decided an intimate destination wedding would be less stressful than a huge event.
And, while Ethridge’s standout moment was seeing Kulyk walk down the aisle to Ed Sheeran’s “Kiss Me”, she was just as overwhelmed with emotion as she laid eyes on her groom.
“It took my breath away,” she says. “I started crying! It was the best day of my life – it’s something I’d always wished for and was better than I could’ve ever imagined.”
The couple did a sand ceremony (involving each pouring sand into a container to symbolize their unity) and recited self-written vows. “We both talked about cheesecake and coffee because those are our favourite things, and we both said that when we sat down to write [vows,] we didn’t know if we’d be able to find the right words. We literally said the same thing!” Kulyk laughs.
At the oceanside reception, the newlyweds enjoyed their first dance (complete with self-choreographed dance moves!) to a cover of Bryan Adam’s “Heaven”, which they pre-recorded.
The couple, who are both signed with Anthem Records, now plan to spend the holidays in what sounds like scenes out of a Christmas movie, before Ethridge plays two shows over New Year’s in Canada.
“I’m taking Eric to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, my hometown,” shares Kulyk, who just released a Christmas cover of “Let It Snow” with Ethridge. “I’ll take him snowmobiling and ice-fishing and hopefully the Northern Lights will be out!”
“Then we’re back in Nashville getting ready to release my next record,” adds Ethridge, who made the “crazy” switch from chiropractor to musician a year ago, and has an extensive Canadian tour kicking off Feb. 21. “And, Kelsey’s working on her next record, so 2020’s going to be very exciting and busy for us!”
