Netflix Reveals 17.1 Million U.S. Viewers Have Watched Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’

“The Irishman” has been racking up rave reviews, and it’s also brought in some big ratings for Netflix.

According to Nielsen figures reported by Variety, the Martin Scorsese-directed gangster epic was watched by 17.1 million unique viewers in the U.S. within the first five days it was available to stream on Netflix.

While these are fantastic numbers, Variety points out that viewership numbers for “The Irishman” are not its highest for a movie. That honour goes to the Sandra Bullock-starring “Bird Box”, which brought in 26 million U.S. viewers within five days of its release.

Ratings for “The Irishman” are, however, higher than those of the heavily hyped “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”, which was seen by 8.2 million within the same period of time.

With a reported budget of $140 million, the mob movie represents one of Netflix’s larger investments. As Variety notes, “While the initial Nielsen estimates suggest a strong debut, there’s really not enough information yet to make any conclusions” as to whether the film can be considered a success for Netflix.
