Christie Brinkley and Elle Macpherson are the inspiration behind one of music’s most iconic songs.
Billy Joel hosted “Billy Joel: An Evening of Questions and Answers…and a little music too” for his SiriusXM channel and spilled the deets on his beloved track “Uptown Girl”.
While taking questions from SiriusXM subscribers in the audience, one fan asked Joel, “Is the story true that you were standing with Iman, Christie Brinkley and Elle Macpherson when that song came to mind?”
And with a laugh, Joel admitted, “Yeah, I met her [Elle Macpherson], Whitney Houston and Christie Brinkley all in the same moment.”
He continued while playing the piano, “So I was kind of feeling sorry for myself as I was just going through a divorce and I’m at this piano in this little bar in St. Barths and I look up and there is Christie Brinkley, Elle Macpherson and Whitney Houston.”
And while Houston was just a model at the time, Joel says he was fixated on Macpherson and Brinkley, who would later marry Joel. The couple welcomed Alexa Ray Joel, 32, together and split in 1994.
“Whitney was only 16 and a model at the time and I’m crushing on Elle and Christie and Whiney was like, ‘I’m gonna be a singer too.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, kid don’t bother me,'” he explained. “Well, I went out with Elle and then I went out with Christie so ‘Uptown Girl’ actually started out as ‘Uptown Girls’.”
