Steve Harvey isn’t letting the haters get him down.
In case you missed it, during Miss Universe 2019 on Sunday, the host of the international beauty pageant made a joke about the Colombian cartelwhile speaking with Miss Colombia Gabriela Tafur about his infamous snafu in 2015, in which he accidentally announced her as the winner. “You’ve forgiven me [but] the cartel has not,” he said, adding, “They’re not handling it the same way.”
The comment immediately sparked online backlash from critics who felt it was offensive and inappropriate.
“Quit tripping every time something negative happens to you,” Harvey tweeted early Monday, along with a video of himself saying, “Now, listen, some bad things are gonna happen to you. That’s life. Know that. The road to success is always under construction.”‘
“Hate is louder than love, but love is stronger than hate,” a second tweet read. “If you focus on those who love you, you can blow over the haters. Most people hate you only because of the way other people love you.
Unfortunately, Harvey’s cartel comment wasn’t the only criticism he received on Sunday. At one point, it seemed he mixed up the National Costume winner, calling out the producers for making a teleprompter mistake. The Miss Universe organization tweeted out a correction Sunday night, however, claiming that Harvey, and their teleprompter, was, in fact, correct when he declared Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados the winner of this year’s National Costume category.
This marked Harvey’s fifth time in a row hosting the pageant, which crowned Zozibini Tunzi From South Africa as this year’s winner. Hear more highlights from the night in the video below.
