In a new interview with Radio Times, the sitcom’s co-creator David Crane revealed that Lisa Kudrow’s character almost had a different ending to her love story.

In case you forgot, during the show’s final episodes, a love triangle played out with Phoebe breaking up with Mike (played by Paul Rudd) before returning to David (portrayed by Hank Azaria), only to almost immediately go back to Mike when he proposed to her.

Between shy – yet lovable – Mike and scientist guy David, Crane says that production was initially unsure about who Phoebe would end up with. However, many people were leaning towards the possibility of David being the last man standing.

“There was definitely a possibility of that,” Crane said. “I mean, we didn’t definitively know [who she’d end up with]”.

“They’re both amazing actors. I mean, both Paul and Hank are fantastic, and fantastic with her. We sort of went back and forth,” he added.

“I don’t even remember all the pieces that led to where we landed, but yeah, it could have gone the other way. Phoebe would have been great with either one.”
