It’s hard to deny Mariah Carey’s dominance of the airwaves during the holiday season. Every year the lyrics to “All I Want For Christmas Is You” fill people’s heads as they hear the song pretty much everywhere they go, since it’s on every Christmas playlist ever made.
Lucky for Mariah because all those plays mean royalties (i.e., the pop star is raking in the big bucks). Although the festive tune has been around for 25 years, for the first time ever, it recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
According to a study by Broadband Deals, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has earned more than $2 million in royalties on Spotify alone. The number is anticipated to keep growing quickly, based on the song’s performance last holiday season. Carey’s song is estimated to ring in approximately $600,000 between November 2019 and this Christmas.
It’s an easy accomplishment for Mariah when “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is Spotify’s most-streamed holiday song of all time, with over 602 million plays on the one streaming service alone. On YouTube, the hard-not-to-dance-to jam has more than 605 million views since it was first uploaded in 2009.
In total, Carey has earned upwards of $60 million in royalties from the popular holiday jam, based on a 2016 estimate by The Economist.
The singer’s success from “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is one of the greatest musical achievements, enough for Amazon to make a mini-documentary about it. The film will be titled “Mariah Carey is Christmas!” and is said to premiere later this month on Amazon. The documentary will explore how the 49-year-old singer’s Christmas song became a mega-hit since it debuted in 1994.
Mariah is celebrating the holiday season with another one of her Christmas bops on the “Late Late Show.” Carey gave an energetic performance of her upbeat song “Oh Santa!” during her appearance on James Corden’s show.
